Serving our Neighbors

The Oak Hill United Methodist Church serves our neighbors at two locations in the City of Oak Hill. Our ministry locations are at 250 Main Street (The Church), and 469 Central Avenue (The Lewis Community Foundation Christian Community Center).

The following is a partial listing of the ministries and opportunities offered:

469 Central Ave.

Wonderful Wednesday Pick-up and Go Meals. Hot meals are offered at no cost to anyone who wishes to receive them each Wednesday from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM. We serve approximately 200 meals each week.

Community Backpack Ministry. This is an ecumenical ministry of the Community Prayer Breakfast group involving many of the churches in the City of Oak Hill. On the first Thursday of each month volunteers meet at the LCCC at two o’clock and pack 400 snack meals for backpacks, and 100 snack meals are delivered to New River Elementary each Friday.

Housing Repair Ministry. This is a ministry of the Missions Team of the Oak Hill UMC to help needy families or individuals with much needed home repairs. This ministry is held during the months of June and July, and we begin taking applications for home repair projects in April. This summer we hosted five work teams from neighboring states, primarily from United Methodist Churches in Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

Oak Hill Food Pantry. This is an ecumenical ministry of the Plateau Ministerial Association involving many of the churches in the City of Oak Hill. The Food Pantry is located at the Lewis Christian Community Center. We serve approximately 300 families each month. The Food Pantry is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month except November and December – when it is held on the third Wednesday.

Day Spring Day Camp. This is a United Methodist Christian Day Camp experience that was held on July 31-August 2, 2023. Twenty children ages 5-12 and twenty adult volunteers participated in the Day Camp this summer. Day Spring is a United Methodist ministry run by Spring Heights Camping and Retreat Center located in Spencer, WV.

Center Shot Ministry. This ministry of the OHUMC is open to children in the third grade and older. It involves trained coaches who work with our youth to teach them the skill of archery along with the Christian goal of “Making Christ the target of our lives.” We hold an eight-week Fall session and an eight-week Spring session. Generally we have 10 to 20 youth participants in this program along with about 10 adults who serve as coaches. All adult volunteers are properly vetted with up-to-date background checks and safe sanctuaries training for this ministry and for all of our ministries with children and youth.

Midget Football League. The Lewis Community Foundation (LCF) leases the Lewis Christian Community Center (LCCC) football field and field house to the Oak Hill MFL from June-November at no cost other than a utility share for the power bill for the concession stand for the months of June-November. Approximately 100 youth participate in this sport.

Little League Baseball – The LCF leases the LCCC Senior Field to the City of Oak Hill for $1.00 per year for Little League baseball.

Fayette County Youth Soccer Association. The LCF partners with the youth soccer association to use the LCCC football field when it is not in use by the MFL.

Walking Track. The LCF maintains the walking track around the LCCC football field and welcomes walkers to utilize and enjoy the free use of the track for walking or jogging.

9-11 Memorial Service. This ministry is led by Spirit and Truth Ministries of Oak Hill, and attracts approximately 200 participants each year. It is held either in the Gym of the Lewis Christian Community Center or on the LCCC football field.

Church and Community Events. The Lewis Christian Community Center is available to churches and community organizations for rent on a reserved basis. On Thanksgiving the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Oak Hill holds its annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the LCCC. Approximately 2,600 meals were served last Thanksgiving. On the first Saturday in August, the American Baptist Association hosted a “Fun Day in the Son” that was very well attended. Individuals, families, and groups may reserve the LCCC by making a reservation through our Facilities Manager. 

Utility Assistance Program. The OHUMC provides office space and a volunteer to assist individuals and families with assistance on their utility bills. This is an ecumenical ministry of the Plateau Ministerial Association that is offered on Tuesdays from 10:00 AM-Noon at the church office on Main Street.

Bus Parking.The LCF partners with Head Start of Fayette County to provide a secure parking facility on the parking lot of the LCCC. The LCF receives payment of $100.00 per month for all of the buses to park on the parking lot within a parking area that is secured by a locked gate and fenced-in lot.

Worship, Education, Service, and Fellowship.The OHUMC and LCCC offers a welcoming Christian community that is open to all people for worship and spiritual formation through education, service, and fellowship. Our worship service begins at eleven o’clock on Sunday morning and ample opportunities to learn and serve God and neighbor are available for anyone who desires to be involved in Christian service in the Oak Hill community and beyond.

SonBeams Preschool. The OHUMC is home to the SonBeams Preschool, which provides a top-rate early Christian educational experience for four year olds. SonBeams is a half-day preschool experience held from 9:00 AM-Noon, Monday-Friday, beginning in September and runs through the month of May.
